Everyone kept asking us how we got campsite number 1 (apparently the most sought-after site in the campgrounds). Unfortunately, we were next to some drunk a-holes who kept Dave up all night. The ranger gave them the boot the next day.

A few miles into our first hike, Dave developed blisters. By the end of the first night, his feet were pretty bad. Dave, being a manly man (and a little bit nutty) decided to press on.

We had a really long hike on Saturday. This is when we learned the scale on our map was off -- way off. What was supposed to be a 5 mile hike to airport turned out to be around 10.

At this point, I felt Dave was losing faith in me as a guide. I remembered reading there was food at the airport, so I was promising him that if he'd hike just a little more, we'd get to eat when we arrived. Dave had been trying to subsist solely on protein bars for food. By the time we ordered our food, Dave was near passing out and needed a hand back to the table. Dave decided to eat a real dinner. Turns out they have a really, really good restaurant. Of course, at this point, Alpo would have tasted good.

I love food that is proportional to body parts, so I had to get a picture of this cookie the size of my hand. Turns out this was one of the best cookies I've ever had -- chocolate oatmeal walnut. Between the two of us, we polished off 5.

Earl happens to work for Raytheon ... on the same program as me. It's funny, Dave and I were commenting on how if you really wanted to impress a girl, you'd fly her out to Catalina for B-B-Q and fly back. Earl did just that. Flew his girl in from San Diego just to get some dinner.

Blackjack campgrounds is in the middle of the woods with no one around. There were two other hikers next to us, a father and daughter mountain biking across the island, and girl hiking the island by herself. Oddly, we were site number 1 again.

We were too lazy to pitch a tent, so we slept out in the open. At some point in the night, a fox decided to poke around our site. If it wasn't for Dave flashing his headlamp, I wouldn't have woken up.

At this point, Dave's feet were in really bad shape. We decided to follow the road into Avalon and get Dave on the next boat home. Unfortunately, this meant we had to detour from the trail for a bit. The plan was I'd walk Dave into town, then head back to the ridge to finish the hike.
