After setting up my campsite, I raced over to the Monterey Aquarium hoping to get in before they closed. Fortunately, they're open until 8PM on Saturdays and Sundays. The aquarium was really great, though it felt like I spent 3 hours elbowing people out of the way to see the exhibits. For some reason, people feel like they need to stand right in front of everyone else to get the perfect shot of the exhibit -- go get a postcard! Needless to say, this is my only shot of the aquarium.

I camped at Half Moon Bay state beach my first night. It was nice beachside site that had about 5 other bikers. I met a lady biking from Montana through the Northwest, down to San Diego, and then on to Florida. 54 miles biked on my first day.

One of the things I had to do on this trip was visit the Mystery Spot in Santa Cruz. It's an odd little place where compasses spin backwards, water runs uphill, and everything is tilted. This shot was taken inside the cabin that was built on the Mystery Spot. Apparently the mystical forces pushed the cabin down the side of the hill, which now rests at a 17 degree slant. My camera was titled opposite the tilt of the cabin.

My campsite for the night at New Brighton state beach. The other person at my site was J.P., a guy from Canada doing the entire Pacifc Coast. Total miles for this day, including riding around the red woods looking for the Mystery Spot, was 75 miles.

Setting up my tent. Notice the two large logs to the right of my tent -- that was one large branch hanging in the tree a few minutes before this shot. Luckily I heard something cracking in the tree and ran before this hunk of wood crashed down. This was my closest call on the trip -- and I wasn't even on my bike.

Today's destination was Montery. According to my map, today's route was short, which would give me time at the Monterey Aquarium. For whatever reason, this flat, 40 mile ride felt much harder. It was mostly farms, and I spent a good hour at a stand eating my bodyweight in fruit halfway through.

I wasted about 2 hours riding around town looking for grocery store, so it was dark when I got back. The park was a bit shady, so I just wanted to get moving. Total miles for the day = 56 miles.
